The Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong and Stella A&C proudly present a unique exhibition presenting Korean beautiful crafts and famous meals.
In the Korean culture, sharing meals together is sharing feelings with loved ones and bringing happiness to them. In this unique exhibition, we will concentrate on a modern Korean meal time. In the modern Korean culture, meal time focuses on not only what we eat but also how we eat and feel.
This exhibition has two parts: two separated films and installation.
Film # 1
For the first film, ceramist Shim Bogeun interpreted the modern version of traditional pot. Meanwhile, video artist Cho Byunghee focuses on potteries and pots, not as containers of food but as beautiful objects that can hold things and liquids.
Film # 2
The second film shows the process to making Korean pot dish. “Chodang Oksusu Sot-bap” used ultra sweet corn that is harvested only in summer and it is cooked in a traditional brass pot. By presenting this dish, we wanted to present the freshness of summer season and the warmth that is contained in Korean dish.
Installation
Ceramist Shim Bogeun’s works and ceramist Park Sung-keuk’s works are installed. Shim Bogeun is inspired by flowers, so his works resemble elegant, feminine, and smooth curves of flowers. On the other hand, Park Sungkeuk's works show the unique texture of the soil, although they are delicate and elaborate.
Participating Artist
Ceramist Shim Bogeun
Shim Bogeun pursues a simple, clean, unpretentious, or unadorned spirit of “no deeds." Thus, the artist presents his works through the brand ‘Mujagi.’ (‘Mujagi’ is the sound of 無作爲 and it means no deeds of pretentiousness.) The artist's way of working is not just to be pretty with the eyes, but to make pottery that can be beautiful in itself by seeping into life and naturally fulfilling its use.
Along with winning various pottery competitions, he still works in various fields as an expert in pottery, despite his young age- the artist is still in his 20’s. Shim Bogeun, who has a keen sense of understanding trends and a solid technical foundation, is a new generation of artists who will lead the Korean pottery scene.
Ceramist Park Songkuk
Park Songkuk projects what he has learned from traveling the world into his ceramic. The TABI Project presents various genres of his pottery works. As a third generation Korean-Japanese, the ceramist got inspirations of "Hanji Series" when he visited museums while traveling Korea. “Hanji Series” embodies the characters of Hanji. (Hanji is traditional Korean paper found in Korean history.) His works pursues "natural lines" and shapes that reminisces the beautiful, luxurious texture of hanji, so the artist focus on making the thin, curved features using soil.
He participated in a number of individual and team competitions, and won prizes. He won prize at the 2011 Gyeonggi World Ceramic Biennale, the 2016 and 2018 Icheon Ceramic TREND Competition, respectively. Park Songkuk's work shows an artistic perspective as an object and a craftsmanship as a product.
Video artist Cho Byunghee
Cho Byunghee draws attention to the hidden features of objects. We can find unexpected aspects of ordinary objects and re-recognize their forms that are different from what we are familiar with. In his works, including designer brand 'KUHO’ and the 2017 season lineup of the National Contemporary Dance Company, we can find the artist’s deep interest in forms and shapes.
These films focus on rhythmical movements and dancing composition; the dancers movements resemble the strokes of artist’s brushworks along with trendy music.
He serves as a video art mediator who interprets music of famous Korean artists such as Zion.T, Gary, U-Kiss, Flowsik, Dynamic Duo, Primary, etc. to visual image and by doing so, he connects the public with potential artists.
