Director Lee Young Ho (from Korean Cultural Centre in Hong Kong “KCC”) and President Pei-kai Cheng (from Jigu Institute) visited the calligraphy exhibition, The Rapport in Calligraphy: Ancient Classics and Cultural Exchange”, organised by the Calligraphy Connections Project (Run Run Shaw Library, City University of Hong Kong “CityU”) and KCC, on 7^th July 2021. They really appreciate the calligraphy artworks, themed on ancient East Asian classics, created by prestigious Korean and Chinese academicians.  The purpose of this calligraphy exhibition is to demonstrate that calligraphy artworks is more than a form of writing art, but also capable of cross-cultural and cross-boundaries exchanges between Korea and Chinese through reading ancient East Asian classics. Some of the classics were authored more than 1000 years ago.

Last Saturday (10 July), CityU student curators from various majors and disciplines (including Media and Communication, Linguistics and Translation, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Accountancy) have provided a guided tour at KCC, in order to introduce 30 calligraphy artworks created by CityU, Seoul National University, Sungkyunkwan University, Kyonggi University, and Daejeon University. All calligraphy artworks are themed on ancient East Asian classics and students have expressed their understandings of the classics through calligraphy.

The guided tour offered the audience 6 ways of appreciating calligraphy and ancient East Asian classics, including:

1. Explaining the calligraphy artworks by referring to the following ancient East Asian classics, the Collection of Korean Anthologies 《韓國歷代文集叢書》and Wenyuange Siku Quanshu Online Subscription 《文淵閣四庫全書電子版》

2. Shooting a documentary “Korean Classics Alive in Hong Kong – Choe Chi-won 崔致遠” in order to introduce 5 poems authored by an ancient Korean literato, Choe Chi-won (857-?).

3. Inviting winners of JC Poetic Heritage Awards 2021 to recite their English translation poem themed on a poem, Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers – Sunset of a Fishing Village 《瀟湘八景 – 漁村落照》authored by an ancient Korean literato, Yi Je-hyeon 李齊賢 (1287-1367).

4. Inviting judging team members of JC Poetic Heritage Awards 2021 to recite their own echo poem (with the same rhyme) with the poem, Eight Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers – Sunset of a Fishing Village 《瀟湘八景 – 漁村落照》authored by an ancient Korean literato, Yi Je-hyeon 李齊賢 (1287-1367).

5. Introducing tactile materials and audio description based on the calligraphy artworks created by Academician Ambrose King (金耀基院士) and Prof Pei-kai Cheng (鄭培凱教授), so that the visually impaired students can appreciate and experience the beauty of Chinese Calligraphy and ancient East Asian classics through touching and listening. 

6. Inviting Ms. Hyun Ju Lee (from UOW College Hong Kong) to recite the classical Chinese poem in Korean authored by ancient Korean literati, so that the audience can appreciate the differences between Cantonese and Korean when reciting the same classical poem.

President Pei-kai Cheng (from Jigu Institute) introduced his calligraphy artwork《思親》(사친) (authored by Korean literato Sin Saimdang (신사임당) (1504-1551)) to Director Lee Young Ho
