[Exhibition] Korea-Hong Kong Humanities Exchange 'Science and Art Calligraphy Exhibition 2024' 📅 2024.10.10. -11.9. 📍 Exhibition Hall (7F) of the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong (Block B, PMQ, 35 Aberdeen Street Central) Choe Chiwon (최치원; 崔致遠), a scholar from the late Silla Kingdom of Korea, gained renown for his exceptional literary skills while serving as an official in the Tang Dynasty. Through his interactions with the Tang Dynasty, he developed a unique philosophy that integrated Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, making him a significant figure in the cultural exchange and ideological fusion of East Asia. Choe Chiwon deeply explored his time’s social and philosophical issues through his poetry and prose, and his works continue to inspire many people today. This exhibition aims to artistically express the importance of harmony through Choe Chiwon’s poetry. The Korea-HK Youth Calligraphy Exhibition is a joint initiative by the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong (KCC), Calligraphers from Korea, and the Calligraphy Club from City University of Hong Kong. Key features of the exhibition include: ●We have selected 10 of Choe Chiwon’s poems, with each poem being interpreted by calligraphy artists from Korea and Hong Kong. In Korea, calligraphy artists will participate, while in Hong Kong, university students majoring in science and engineering who love calligraphy will join. We aim to showcase a new approach that transcends the boundaries between sciences and humanities by presenting different interpretations of the same poem. ●One of the highlighted poems is “Autumn Night Rain,” which reflects Choe Chiwon’s philosophy. This poem, centered on the theme of rain on an autumn night, celebrates the harmony between nature and humanity, expressing Confucian human-centered thought, Buddhist impermanence and liberation, and Taoist harmony with nature. Visitors will gain an understanding of Choe Chiwon’s philosophical depth and its enduring relevance in modern society. ●Calligraphy is an art that visually expresses philosophy and thought. By reinterpreting Choe Chiwon’s integrated philosophy of Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism through calligraphy, artists from Korea and Hong Kong will showcase unique works that reflect their cultural characteristics. We strive to emphasize the significance of collaboration across generations and regions. This exhibition will strengthen the cultural bonds between Korea and Hong Kong and play an important role promoting the diversity and harmony of Asian culture in the world. Thank you for your interest and support.
