[KFPI] Notice of Application for Designation as Excellent Korean Restaurant in 2026

□ Overview

 ❍ Legal Basis for Designation : Article 15 of the Act on Korean Food Promotion (Designation of Excellent Korean Restaurants)

Article 15 (Designation of Excellent Korean Restaurants) ① The Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs may designate Excellent Korean Restaurants for the purpose of improving the quality of Korean cuisine and protecting consumers. 

② Korean restaurants designated under Paragraph ① may display a sign indicating their designation as an Excellent Korean Restaurant by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

 ❍ Target Cities for 2026 : 4 cities

  - Singapore, Bangkok (Thailand), Jakarta (Indonesia), Hong Kong 

 * The number of target countries(cities) is planned to be gradually expanded in the future.

 ❍ Designation application announcement available on the website of the Korean Food Promotion Institute (www.hansik.or.kr).

 

 Support to be Provided to Designated Restaurants

 ❍ Issuance of Excellent Korean Restaurant Certificate and production of designation signage 

 ❍ Promotional support for the designated restaurants 

 ❍ Invitation to Korea for the designation ceremony and educational workshops 

 * Scheduled for late October 2026 (4th–5th week), for approximately 2 nights and 3 days; details are subject to change due to internal circumstances.

 

 Mandatory Eligibility Requirements for Application (mandatory items from designation criteria)

 ❍ Must have operated a Korean restaurant in the relevant country for the past three years 

 ❍ At least 60 percent of all main dishes on the menu must be Korean cuisine 

 ❍ Must not have violated local hygiene/sanitation regulations over the past two years

 

 Designation Criteria and Detailed Evaluation Standards

 ❍ Mandatory Items : ① Must have operated a Korean restaurant in the relevant country for the past three years, ② At least 60 percent of all main dishes on the menu must be Korean cuisine, ③ Must not have violated local hygiene/sanitation regulations over the past two years 

❍ Evaluation Items : ① Quality and service level of Korean cuisine, ② Hygiene management of the restaurant, ③ Restaurant’s appearance, cleanliness, and customer guidance, ④ Contribution to the promotion and dissemination of Korean cuisine 

※ The designation criteria are prescribed in the Enforcement Regulations of the Act on Korean Food Promotion, and the evaluation items are stipulated in the Detailed Evaluation Standards for the Designation of Excellent Korean Restaurants as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Application Forms for Designation as Excellent Korean Restaurant

· Download and fill out the attached [Form] below (select either Korean or English) 

· The [Form] includes: ① Application for Designation, ② General Status, ③ Consent to the Collection and Use of Personal Information

Copy of a document verifying that the restaurant is a registered business (business license, etc.)

· Copy of the Business Registration Certificate in accordance with local laws and regulations 

※ Must include essential information such as the business name, the representative/owner and the address.

Document(s) verifying that the applicant has operated a Korean restaurant for the past three years (in the respective country)

· If the business start date is verifiable on the Business Registration Certificate, it may be substituted with that document. 

· If not verifiable, separate supporting documents proving the business start date must be submitted. 

※ The document must verify the actual business start date of the restaurant, not the date of incorporation.

Employee List (must include nationality and level of Korean proficiency)

· Fill out the relevant section in the attached [Form] below.

Document(s) verifying the chef’s credentials and experience 

(must include whether he/she has completed Korean cuisine training)

· Submit only if applicable 

(e.g., Craftsman Cook (Korean Food), Certificate of Career or Experience, Graduation Certificate, Certificate of Training Completion, etc.)

Restaurant menu

(must include the name and a photo of each main dish)

· Copy of the menu

Purchase/transaction statement for Korean food ingredients imported from Korea

· Transaction statements or receipts for Korean products 

· Only products with “Korea” as the country of origin will be recognized 

· Up to six items will be recognized (Maximum points for submitting six items).

Document(s) verifying compliance with local hygiene standards for the past two years 

· Submit relevant supporting documents 

(e.g., local hygiene inspection reports, hygiene rating certificates, etc.)

 ※ Evaluation will be conducted based on the submitted documents. Incomplete applications will be excluded from the evaluation process without prior notice; applicants are advised to thoroughly review all materials before submission. However, additional documentation may be requested if deemed necessary for eligibility verification.

 ※ All notifications regarding the evaluation process will be sent to the email address provided in the application. Applicants are responsible for any disadvantages resulting from incorrect contact information, failure to check emails, or being unreachable.

 ※ Designation as Excellent Korean Restaurant may be revoked if, according to Article 15-3 of the Act on Korean Food Promotion, (1) such designation was made based on false information or other fraudulent means or (2) it is later discovered that the restaurant fails to meet all designation criteria

 

 Designation Process : Application Submission → Screening (document review and on-site evaluation) → Comprehensive Review → Designation

 ❍ Document Review : Check for completeness of submitted documents and fulfillment of mandatory requirements. 

 ❍ On-site Evaluation : Conducted via announced and unannounced evaluations based on the Detailed Evaluation Standards for the Designation of Excellent Korean Restaurants as announced by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. 

    * Detailed on-site evaluation schedules will be provided, on an individual basis, to restaurants subject to evaluation. Failure to cooperate with on-site evaluations will result in disqualification from the process. 

 ❍ Comprehensive Review : Final deliberation on designation as an Excellent Korean Restaurant 

 ❍ Designation : Issuance of Excellent Korean Restaurant Certificate and public announcement of the designation on the websites of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korean Food Promotion Institute. 

    * Final designees will be notified individually
