12-03-2019 | 2443 Hit

From April 2019, Korean Cultural Center presents "Korean Folk Song (Minyo) Learning Workshops".

Minyo (民謠, a style of Korean accompanied folk singing) is one of the traditional Korean vocal music that contains Korean history and spirit.

Each province in Korea has its own dialect and the way they sing a Minyo may be different too. Thus, students in this class will have the chance to learn and recognize the characteristics of each dialect in its region. Apart from that, traditional Korean musical instruments play an important role on folk song, thus students will also learn to play one of the major instrument - Korean traditional percussion instrument (장구/Jang Gu).

Among all folk songs, the most popular one is "Arirang", which will be taught in the class. It is estimated the song is more than 600 years old. Arirang is an important intangible cultural asset that has been listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Arirang is often considered the unofficial national anthem of Korea that is well known all over the world. "Oh Na Ra", a popular theme song of a TV drama (Daejanggeum / 大長今), which was well known in Hong Kong, will also be taught.

You can have a deeper understanding on Korean culture, history, language and spirit through learning the lyrics of different folk songs. It will be a good time to enjoy folk songs for those who are interested in Korean traditional music and culture.

Participants should come at all 8 classes!
